I have showed pictures of these apistos to a bunch of people in the "know" and I get the same weird look. The pictures are in the order they were taken from when they first arrived with me five months ago up to this morning. They have grown quite large and gone from not looking like much to being quite attractive.

What would the difference between sexes be? I have four, and for the most part they look pretty much the same. What family or group would they fall under? When I got them they were supposed to be gephyra. As it turns out two of them were male Trifasciata and the other four were the eartheaters that are in this threads pictures.

One of the Eartheaters has a vibrant red trace along the gillcover and tracing the jaw line. The others do not have this.

Females will have round tails & lower dorsal fin. They are a member of the A-pertenis-group (A.-pertensis-complex) of Koslowski. They are know from the Rio Purus of Brazil, although Kullander (1982) shows a specimen that is supposed to have been collected in the Manacapuru area just west of Manaus.
