I was just looking for thoughts on keeping 1 male and three females together in a 33gl tank (3x1). I have read that the males can handle more then one female but I was wondering if a three foot tank would have enough room for the the three females to each have a large enough territory. the tank would of course be well planted and have lots of wood, with planty of caves. any tips or experinces would be appriciated. I guess the other option would be for each female to have her own tank (20gl) and just move the male around as needed. I am trying to work with what I have as i have found it hard to obtain these fish in my part of canada without great great expense....

Nanochromis transvestitus

Dear Andy,

Nanochromis tranvestitus is a pair-bonding cave spawner. Eventually, your lone male will pair up with one of the females, and they could make life very difficult for the other two. Plently of plants, wood and hiding places should help; but when nature calls, it may be necessary to remove the two non-breeding females.

Good luck with them!

All the best,

Randall Kohn
