I've heard about sleeper males Mac, the behaviour of the pair sugest that they're compatible, don't know how old they are as I've only had them two months , I bought them from a guy who I'mported them from Eastern Europe, the male looks older and is much bigger.I searched YouTube for Mcmasteri red neck and found a guy with a pair that are exactly the same so I'm thinking are they a pair afterallI have doubts the one on the right is a female. The caudal makes me think it might be a sleeper male. Could be wrong though.
How old are the fish? They look a bit older.
I'll send more pics ASAP Mac, when I bought them ,they were sold as Viejita but when I put them on a FB site the admin blocked my post because I tagged them as Viejita, in order for the post to go ahead I had to rename them Mcmasteri.Well, I think with more info we can tell you more. I'll stick to the assumption age might indeed be a factor for now.
A picture of the tank, the food you feed them, any tankmates etc...
Otherwise the breeds that are more removed from the wild form tend to have more problems with infertility. Also a possibility.
Oh and also these are not red shoulders, this breed is most often found as "Viejita II". There are no rules for breeders naming their strains and retailers also don't care.

I usually see this strain listed as Macmasteri “Gold”Oh and also these are not red shoulders, this breed is most often found as "Viejita II". There are no rules for breeders naming their strains and retailers also don't care.
Thanks anewbieIf you intend to breed them the rummy will go after the frys. Also rummy really should be in a 48 inch aquarium (or longer). I have 40 in a 500 (which is 8ft long). The first 3 weeks they swam back and forth the length of the tank 12 hours a day. Now, a year later, they are lazy just sort of well don't do much at all. Guess they saw enough of the aquarium to last a life time.
As per usual, you have lots of different names for one and the same strain. Just the use of red neck or red shoulder for this strain was new to me. Gold and several others I have noted already.I usually see this strain listed as Macmasteri “Gold”
Yeah me too Mac, these are my first pair of Apistogramma since the 1980's so I've lost touch with the Apistogramma scene, when I posted them on a FB site under the Viejita tag which is what the seller had advertised as the above the admin said that they were red neck Mcmasteri so I just went with the latter.I really like themAs per usual, you have lots of different names for one and the same strain. Some of the domestic strains of mcmasteri are quite appealing there is also a gold or gold neck that i've seen that looks nice. I've mostly gone with wilds for various reasons but that doesn't mean i can't enjoy a pretty fish (one of my favorite are gold rams).Yeah me too Mac, these are my first pair of Apistogramma since the 1980's so I've lost touch with the Apistogramma scene, when I posted them on a FB site under the Viejita tag which is what the seller had advertised as the above the admin said that they were red neck Mcmasteri so I just went with the latter.I really like them
