This site helped me last month with an ID and now I need more help. A friend (who is not local) is moving, and asked if I'd be interested in some of his fish. I was a bit disappointed with the physical condition of the overfed fin-nipped fish, but they were free and are now in a quarantine tank. He told me that he bought these as Pseudocrenilabrus nicholsi.

I kept nicholsi years ago and they looked a bit different.

They look like Pseudocrenilabrus nicholsi to me. A bit rough as you said, but I would say they are P. nicholsi.
