Marble hatchets

Hi all!!!

Quick question.
Just out of curiosity how high can marble hatchets jump?

Seen: 15-20cm
Reported: 50cm

The question is more how far they can jump: I've seen one jump a 60cm distance but only 5-10cm above the surface.

They are on the potential list of dithers for the new tank, but then i would ofcause have to have coverlid on.
I’ll start with the n. Marginatus i already have and then see what happens next.

I've seen them jump well over a foot (30 cm) high and twice that far to avoid being netted out of streams. They actually can fly when necessary.

That’s crazy impressive for such small fish.

A small tributary to the Rio Curaray, Peru:
Sitting in a canoe, I noticed some interesting ripples on the water surface, and that there seemed to be a lot of movements below it:

Suddenly a predator (unknown) attacked the small fishes, who escaped by jumping:

Afterwards, thousands of small fish seemed to take refuge behind our canoe:

I dipped the net to see what they were:

Hatchet fish and other small tetras.

An unforgettable experience!

btw I intend to put a group of my hatchet fishes in my low ph tank - the one with a colony of somethign - leaning towards mega or abaxis. The trick is my tank has 18 inch high glass sides so that should keep them in

I would not bet on the guy highest up is LESS than 18 inch (45 cm) above the surface:
