Macmasteri or Veijita?

Hello all,

I'm fairly new to apistos, but I've heard how rare A veijita is in the hobby. Are these fish up for sale by Aquatic Arts actually veijita, or are they a color form of macmasteri? Thanks.

This beautiful dwarf cichlid is somewhat less commonly seen, but it is certainly one of the most colorful Apistogramma species!

You don’t usually see that much red on a viejita’s body. There are more definitive markings to look at, but it looks very classically like a macmasteri to me.

A number of individual breeders these days have F1 viejita from Puerto Gaitan.

I personally think Macs are prettier.

Sweet, I’ll have to remember about those breeders in the future. I’m unfortunately not in a position to keep any more fish right now.

The Macs are very pretty. I think the veijita have the appeal of being more rare.
