Live Food-worms

I'm want to feed my Apisto's live food, worms specifically, but don't know which is the best type to use. I would like to culture my own. I've heard of some type that will survive in aquarium gravel and can then cause problems later when they die. I can't recall which kind this was. Is anyone culturing their own and if so what type are they and how are they being raised.

california blackworms can live (and die) in your aquarium. they are very good food for fish. i would not feed them, unless i was SURE about the source, due to bacterial problems related to some sources of supply. but, many people buy them from the company on the banner on this page,

and they have been proven to be disease free, by independant lab inspection a number of times. go through the foods people feed their discus on that page, and i would think that red wrigglers would be good. they will easily culture for you, and they can be chopped for your fish, if they are too big.

I have been feeding CBW for more than a year, and I haven't had any problems with my fish at all.

or do you find a way to breed them and continuously have worm whithout buy all the time ?

what is your source mat? i know at least 3 people who have had bad problems with lfs blackworms. (half of the fish dying at once f/i) not to say that any lfs is going to be a problem, but i would get some from a known good source if i was to feed them. i have discus playing at spawning, and if they do, i'll be getting some in from blackworms- are- here only 'cause i know anand and cary have both sent them out to a lab, and they've come back clean.

My friend Yvan makes a big order every 2 weeks. He gets 3lbs for Jeff, 1/2lb for me and and some for a few others. I think he gets them from California Black Worm. I haven't asked Jeff if he's had problems, and I know Yvan hasn't, I haven't, so that's a lot of worms to go through. I think they must be clean.

I get a monthly shipment from California Black Worm myself. I keep them in a fridge here in the basement, rinse them daily, feed them a couple times a week to the breeders. I haven't had any problems that I can attribute to the worms. They seem very clean. A pound last me about a month before they start loosing their mass. At that point, some of the larger fry get them along with fish in the community tanks as a treat. Nothing goes to waste
