What kind of lighting hours and schedule should I maintain for providing optimal time for breeding my south american cichlids? Cuz I have heard that after total darkness fish tend to eat their fry..... It'll be really helpful if some of you guys share your lighting hours

Ignore the whole topic. Darkness is only a problem if you have nocturnal catfish (including Ancistrus sp. = bristlenose plecos) in the same tank.

Otherwise the light has little to no impact. Most species of Apistogramma live more or less close to the Equator, so there is little to no difference in day/night periods.

We're talking related genera of cichlids from overlapping ranges and similar lifestyles. So, yes.

Your only problem with lighting and apistos (and other fish) eating eggs/fry is if lights are turned on suddenly and it frightens the fish. If the aquarium lights come on after the room is light then it should not be a problem. If it is dark and the lights suddenly turn on it can be a problem for more shy species. When I was breeding A. bitaeniata, I would keep a small child's night light on when it was dark.
