76°F / 24.5°C is fine for maintenance. Raising fry at that temperature generally results in a majority of females.

It already has a few characteristics of a female. Who knows yet though. It’s been at 78 these past few days due to weather. I’m excited to see how it turns out though.

Sex is 'set' by temperature by the end of the 2nd month (6 - 8 weeks post hatching).

Looks to me like something in the "Regani Group". Second photo in post #11 shows abdominal stripes, similar to A. cruzi (using Mike's "Description of Apistogramma Species Groups")

No, different species. Marandu looks like one of several cruzi-like species TomC & I collected in the Río Napo drainage in 2012. I tend to agree with gerald that it's a regani-group species. Still too young to ID.

It's got the blue specks under the stripes typical of Marandu. His ventral and dorsal fins are also outlined in a medium orange.

Katie, you'll discover that color in apisto identification is less important than the pattern of dark markings. I'd say that 60%+ of the regani-lineage species show a similar facial color pattern, many with the addition of red streaks and spots.

I’m about to crest a specific gel food for Apistos. So far I’m going to add earthworm and flies if I can catch some. What else would be good? I just ordered astaxanthin.

I guess I’ll start using this as sort of a progress thread until I can get an ID. It looks like he’s grown the slightest of a bit using one of the rocks as a base for that. Seems to have more blue that I was having trouble getting to pop up that good.
