I have been trying to get my Cacatuoides to breed for 2 months now with no success. This past weekend while I was away my sponge filter stopped working. There was no surface agitation at all. Heavily planted 20 gallon. While taking the filter out I noticed fry. I wonder if the lack of surface agitation had anything to do with the spawning or if it was a coincidence.

I don't honestly know. I have no problems breeding A. cacatuoides with surface agitation. My guess is that it is pure coincidence.

If you saw fry on Monday, they must have spawned before the weekend.

Gerald's right. It take about a week after spawning for the fry to become freeswimming.
