Info needed on A. 'pibas'

I'm doing things the 'right' way, buying the fish 1st. Ha!

I have a young trio in a 10 gallon, 6" high tank. After conditioning my hard /alk water and supplying many low caves, the fish look great. I'm feeding mosquito larvae, blackworms Artemia, etc..

I'd appreciate any info on or experiences with this species (they were sold as A. 'pivas').

I'll add that I have to clean up a shattered mercury thermometer that sprayed Hg all over my fish room. This may be a Defining Moment in my aquaristic career.

i think the reel name of your fish (admitting there are well identify) will be : A. sp. Pebas/Morado

You're on the right track with your A. sp. Pebas, also called A. sp. Ampiyacu/Morado(Purple)/Dolly/Naronha. Try to get the pH below 6.5 for breeding. Using a little spagnum peat-filtered water will do the trick and might even lower the hardness of the water.

Are you sure that it was a mercury thermometer that you broke? Was the liquid metallic silver (mercury) or red (alcohol)? If actually mercury, as an environmental remediation specialist (nuclear/toxic waste), I strongly suggest that you keep any children - especially under 10 - away from the area until you clean it up thoroughly and carefully. Small amounts of mercury vapors can really mess up developing brains. Send me an email if you need to know how to do this reasonably well without the exorbitant costs the government would want.
