Greetings Apisto Lovers,

I would like to ask an opinion from any experts or anyone regarding the

Apisto Mendezi that I acquired recently and also help me sexing them. Firstly

I would like to apologize for the bad quality pictures and sorry for any

inconvenience that I cause. Thank you.

Firstly,

Male Apisto Mendezi

Question:
1) Is this male A. Medezi?

2) May I know which Mendezi variant/collection is this?

Secondly,

Female

Question:
1) Is this Female A. Mendezi or a sneaker Male?

2) If its not, can someone give me a description of a female A. Mendezi and

some pictures for my reference.

Any opinion will be a great deal to me because A. Mendezi is one of my fav

apisto of all time and I'm planning to bred it but first I would like to know

do I have a possible pair. Many thanks to those that willing help.

Regards,

DeMo

Completely unexperienced guess (never dealt with this species before)

But it appears to me that if you reversed your supposed sexing, all will be fine.

Top appears female to me, bottom appears male.

1st fish is for 99% male- look at little developed lyretail. Yellos colour is little confusing, but IMHO this fish is male.
Second fish is female. this fish have a round caudal fin.

Thank you Rusted Knight and Ruki.

Im guessing the bright yellow comes from the reflected light and poor

photography.

From the comments that being given from Ruki, I presume that its a pair

of A. Mendezi.

Any chance that any of you guys know which collection point are they?

Because I do have another type of A. Mendezi with a different type of caudal.

Also how do I identify or what are the characteristics that I should look into

sexing a female A. Mendezi?

Thank you.

DeMo

Females won't have lyretail and so much elonged fins. Do not look at colour- I have a very colorful female.

Ic.

Sometimes it is very difficult to see when they are not fully develop.

Also some of the sneaker male do show female characteristic that sometimes

giving me a hard time to identify.

Previously, I had a bad experience of purchasing A. Eremnopyge whereby

I bought them as a trio and it turned out to be 3 males.

I was devastated because those are one of my favorite apisto.

As for this A. Mendezi the size different between the pair made me skeptical

because it isn't much and both do look very similar in term of shape.

That is why I decided to post and ask for opinions from others.

After hearing your opinion (Ruki) gave me some hope that they are a pair.

Thank you.

Sometimes sneakers are hard to identify. I had a male of A. sp "Abacaxis" which was pretending having eggs.

Hi again,

Eventho Ruki gave me his opinion regarding the sex of my A. Mendezi, I am

still in doubt that I have a pair. After observing for the past couple of days,

I occur to me that both of my A. Mendezi are actually female. I cant confirm

this and that is why I will post their pictures. Hoping to get second opinion

from experts out there. Ruki if you reading this dont hesitate to give yours.

Btw, hope these pictures help.

Thank you.

Lukasz is correct. The photos are too small to be meaningful. How large are these fish? If under 35mm/1½" SL they are probably too young to sex with 100% accuracy. Once mature, sexing is fairly easy: Males - lyretail with distinct markings; Females - round/squared-off tail with no (or very indistinct) markings. Personally, I find Lukasz's IDs to be very good. Trust him.

Thank you for your replies.

I am sorry that I didnt provide inadequate information.

Will try my best to get a better clearer picture soon.

I do count Ruki's opinion and I am thankful to him for his opinion.

Im still learning to identify and sexing apisto and would like to gather

as much information as possible.

Thank you.

p/s: will post the pic as soon as Im done with my work
