Sorry I missed this post earlier, M.J. I've seen the photos before. All I can say is, that in many respects, they do look more like the type specimens in Kullander's original description than those seen in the photos of Dr. Staeck's specimens, which he collected in Ecuador. The type forms (preseved, of course) are described and pictured as having no spotting in the caudal fin. The caudal fin on Staeck's fish are distictly spotted. This could be a population variation. We see similar differences in A. atahualpa, among others.

I think there are many species of Apisto in Peruvian and Ecuador region, which exactly needed to classify.
