  I have some A.bitaeniatas(trio) and I believe they are infested with some sort of parasite probly the whole community tank because I have notices that my female ram is acting the same. Heres what I have noticed. They are listless and hide all the time and when they come out there is a protrusion (not opivisor) because the male has same thing protruding from anal area it looks like some sort of worms they are redish and seem to have greatly enlargeg the fishes anal region. I have been ysing parasite buddies and melofix also copper sulfate. I wish I had some pics to show you but broke my camera. What if any thing can I do to get rid of this malody. and to maybe save the rest of fish exposed. :frown:

Sincerely Curtis
PS: I think theses fish were peruvian imports not sure

If it looks like this then it's camallanus worms:

para1.jpg

I obtained Levacide from the vet to get rid of this infestation. Levacide contains 7.5% Levamisole hydrochloride. Dosage was 1ml for every 5l. One time treatment very effective.

There's a fair amount on the web about this parasite and the treatment.

Blackworms are OK if you feed in moderation. Overfeeding from some reports has caused just the symptoms discribed. Yes I feed live blackworms and before I knew how much to feed I did have a big problem.

did it cause the cammalanus worms or is this a side effect from too much worms? I've got an angel female that has this REALLY bad, I cannot find ANY levamisole hydrochloride at ALL. If I don't find some soon I will lose the pair, she's starting to hemmorage. I don't want to euthanize, if I can save her that's all that matters. I don't care if she can't breed anymore, I just want save the pair.

 how close to border. if you are close go to american vet and get it also ask your vet for Trimisol it is the same thing at least that is what my vet said and it worked for me I used 4 pills for 20gal had to compleatly clean tank afterwards but it woked. Hope this helps your angel is probly not the only one infested when you see them they have matured and have begun reproducing. I hope this helps

I know she's probably not the only one infected, I'm not that close to the border. I probably won't even be able to just get the medication I need either.

In the beginning I overfed the blackworms and somehow that caused the problem. I cut back to only feeding a few each time (about every third day). I have all bare-bottom tanks and could see the blackworms crawling all over the bottom. Since then I have cut way back on feeding them especially to Apistos.

well I started feeding medicated food last night, although the female angel isn't readily taking all foods she did eat some and appears to be looking a little better, not as many worms. I moved her and her mate to a quarantine tank so she can eat at her own leisure. I still need to find the drug, hopefully if places haven't heard of levamisole they will have heard of ergamisol. However, I think ergamisol is the human version, used for AIDS patients.

It s weird because levamisole is used for sheeps, porks and poultry treatment and in France you find it in any drugstore.
I bought 1 liter for 16€ (probably 20$); and i got 950ml left and it expires next month  .
Wished i could send you some.

No problem =) I appreciate the thought.

The problem is that even if I do find some today, it will still have to be pushed back until tomorrow because any place I'll be able to get it from will be at least a half hour drive from here. Not something that's easy to do when I get off work at 6pm. Most places that sell this sort of thing would be closed by then. It was hard enough trying to get ahold and any vets last night.

BTW Thanks alot mematrix (j.k)... the second you started this thread is when my fish started to get really sick =(

Hey,

I don't think treating your fishes is an emergency.
They can live months with camallanus and if one is very weak, it s probably too late.

I think what you're searching for is called "Levacide" in North America.
I'm sure you can find it in drugstores but they usually don t have it , you have to order it. Vets can probably get this on order as well.

I've got some, a few people in the VAHC (aquatic hobbyist club) had this happen about a month or two ago and they have some levamisole. I got enough to treat 300 gallons, that should be enough.

Well...the tanks have been dosed. Only time will tell the results, with my luck the meds would have expired or something....
