How many GBRs can I keep in the same tank? xxx

Hi Folks,

Currently, I have 41 juvenile GBRs in their own tank. I estimate that two-thirds are male and one third female. They are just over four months old. I would like to put some of these back into my community tank (in which the parents spawned). Would it be OK to do this? The tank is 125 litres.

Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Hi Spinon.

Personally my rule with Rams has been just one pair or 5 plus. I've found the pair tend to be to aggressive if just one or two other Rams in tank, though come spawning time and I've found other females can get very involved in the mated pairs relationship!

I had a pair that use to continually harass a 3rd female ram, yet when they spawned the isolated fish would become very aggressive and stand up for herself and more!

Regarding adding your juveniles, how big are they? I'd keep a very close eye on them if parents are still in tank. I currently have over 100 juvenile gbr's growing out, most are nearly 5 months old and don't think their big enough in my opinion to handle territorial adult Rams, especially a mated pair.

Out of interest, do you have any signs of breeding activity in your young Rams? I've been breeding Rams for many years and I'm always amazed how young they pair up and start spawning behaviour. I've got at least 8 pairs currently...been trying to isolate one pair in particular but if I take just one step towards the tank all 100 plus occupants amass into a wiggling cloud of fins and eyes at the front of the tank expecting food!!!

Finally, I have to just add this dispite saying it many times before.... dispite my preference for Apistos, a pair of gbr's with a cloud of fry is still my favourite sight in this amazing hobby! Truly a sight to behold.

BTW I've always spawned Rams at ph between 6.5 and 7, tds around 200ppm.

Ade.

Hi Ade,

Thanks for your reply.

So it looks as though a total of five or six GBRs would be OK in one tank. In other words, I could transfer, say, four juveniles back to the community tank in which the parents reside. That would be nice.

The male juveniles are just over an inch in length with females being a bit smaller. I haven't noticed any 'courting' as yet. My water parameters are pretty much identical to yours.
