HELP.....Sick Hemichromis??

Hello

A friend of mine has a "sick" Hemochromis maybe.

There is blackening under its skin which looks like ink under the skin (which obviously it isnt)? Other than that, the fish is looking pretty healthy.

Can anyone help with what may be wrong?

Dear Bill,

Besides the blackening you described, are there any other symptoms? Is the condition restricted to a small area, or is it spreading? Do any other fish in the tank show the same symptoms? Do you note a thickening of the effected fish's mucus membrane, loss of appetite and/or some swelling in the abdominal area?

In my experience, this can be something as simple as an abrasion from rubbing on a rock or an "argument" with the neighbors. On the off chance that he doesn't show any signs of improvement, it can also be a subcutaneous hemmorhage or infection.

Here's what I found online:

Myxobacteriosis
Symptoms: Symptoms may include black patches on the body and fins. The body may become bloated or swollen in some areas.
Treatment: As far as I know, there is only one medication designed specifically for myxobacteriosis--Phenocide by Aquatronics.

Information: This infection is rather uncommon but fairly easy to treat. Its probability is intensified by overcrowding and poor water quality with high levels of ammonia and / or nitrites.
