I joined a short time ago and I figure it is time to introduce myself. My name is Sean and like the title says, I live in central Iowa. I am here to research the Apistogramma. I originally wanted to get several A. cacatuoides for my new 75 gallon Amazon biotope planted tank. I have had a couple PM conversations with Apistomaster and now I am looking into several different species. I am toying with the idea of getting wild caught fish if I can get them. I like smaller fish and was attracted to the finnage on the cacatuoides. I have read that the cac can be blue in the wild and I really like blue fish. Apistomaster suggested the trifasciata. I see that they are also blue.

Anyway, I look forward to some enlightening conversations about the apistgramma.

Welcome to the apisto forum. You'll find good information here. As for blue apistos, yes there are many that are mostly blue or have populations that are. Blue wild A. cacatuoides are rarely seen in the hobby. This is due to where they occur (outside of normal commercially collected areas) and the fact that there is a bigger demand for the brightly colored red domestic strains. There are several populations of A. agassizii, A. borellii, A. trifasciata, and A. sp. Pebas (Morado) that are commonly available commercially. Then there are many less common (in the hobby) species that appear on occasions. I think that your best bet is to look at photos of apistos and see which appeal to you.
