Hello,

I obtained a pair of these guys about a month ago, and spent several weeks getting pictures that were postable. At this point, I think that I have two males which is fine for now. If I can locate a female, how important would it be to trade in one of those males? Right now, they are in a 75 which is lightly stocked, but a medium level of complexity(some plants, some driftwood, some caves) I live in Minneapolis, MN proper, and my mississippi water is a good fit, my concern is more male/female ratios, and what is most healthy for th fish. I found Tom and Martin's site which told me that they would prolly like water a little lower in PH than what I naturally have. Right now they are getting a high qualiity shrimp pellet and blackworms . They seem healthy, but I really like when my fish breed, because then I can watch some fascinating behavior. So, that is my ultimate goal here. THank you for the help.

If that's a 75g tank then it must be over 4ft long right?

I'd be very tempted to keep both males and add up to 4 females to your tank. The females will each carve out a territory and the males will then spar over the females. I reckon you'd see loads of really natural and intersting behaviour then.

Yes, what he said would be the best idea. Then you may be fascinated all over with breeding spots all over the 75 gallon. I think that would be the best! :)

Where did you pick them up at? A lfs? I live in St. Paul but I'm Duluth right now for college and was just wondering so I know where to check out.. Thanks. pm if you want.

Phil,

I got mine from Teresa at Terre Quatics(sp?). I was just in the mpls location of AWOF, and they had several in one of their tanks. So, I think that I saw a female in that tank, of course my issue is are they the exact same location? The fish from Terre Quatics were there over a month ago, and the fish at AWOF were just there last week.(Which of course has nothing to do with whether they came form the same wholesaler or same location at all) If I could find four females I would love to put them all n the same tank and watch, so I might have to start making more weekly pilgrimages or calls. Thanks for the ideas. I had also thought about mixing other order apistos into the tank. Any ideas on that?

David,

I have never been to Terre Aquatics. I talk to Teresa all the time on Minnfish and my brother always goes there, but I never have.. I think I need to make a trip there very soon. A world of Fish has a decent selection also. There is actually one up here in Duluth but it is nothing compared to the one in Minneapolis..

By chance do you know any other types that Teresa or AWOF had in?

And for mixing apistos, I'm new but I have read about people mixing there apisto groups. I mean you have to have alot of caves and plants but it should be fine. I currently have Cacatuoides and Panduros together.. I have only female Cacatuoides though so I am looking for a male or to trade in for some Panduro females..

Phil,

I haven't had a chance to get up there recently(month), but the last time I was there, she had some wild form cacatoides. My other types of fish have seemed to take a break from spawning, so I don't have much to trade in and things are tight budget wise. She gets new fish fairly regularly, but I couldn't tell you what she has now. I haven't noticed any posts from her recently about what she has gotten in, so I couldn't tell you.

Well Phil,

I had some free time and made the trek to WOF and the Pebas were gone. They did have some beautiful Macmasteri(sp?), so I might have to head back tomorrow and see if they are still there. THe only problem being that I would have to put them in a differet tank, I think. The pebas are regani lineage, which is also macmasteri ( yes everyone?), and thus should not be in the same tank to prevent hybridization(right?). It would be great if someone knew differently about these two fish, 'cause if they could go in the same tank that would be great. Of course, I could find out it was ok and go back to WOF tomorrow morning and they would be gone and it would all be for nought. Well, we will see.

WOW! One of my favorites! I definately think that you should pick them up if you have free time tomorrow. May I ask how much were they? And maybe we will have to trade off if you successfully breed them :)
Anyway, the pet stores in Duluth aren't that great compared to the city ones.. :(
