I've been out of the Apisto realm for quite a few years and just started setting up some tanks for Apistos again last month. I searched high and low on the web for Romer's Cichlid Atlas Volume I, since it came out while I was on hiatus. After lots of digging, finding out that inventory had burned in a fire and David Soares telling me that the re-issue might yet be a ways out, I felt like maybe I'd just have to give it up for now.

Yesterday I was at a LFS getting a few plants and scavengers for the Apisto tanks and decided to glance over their wall of books. Lo and behold on the far end of a dusty shelf was not one, but TWO copies of the book! I couldn't believe it. Since they were looking somewhat neglected, the super cool dude behind the counter even gave me 25% off the one I bought.

They still have one left, so if anyone is desperate to get their hands on a copy, they had them stickered at $65. I couldn't guarantee that I'd get the same discount as before, but I'd be happy to try to snag it for someone in need.

I do think it's a great book for Apisto-heads, but I was somewhat suprised at the absence of species I was expecting to see. Species I had even kept 6 or 7 years ago (like the morado in my avatar). I assume this only means I need to get volume 2. :) I'm very envious of the amount of time these guys have been able to spend in the native habitats. Maybe someday...

The reason it doesn't have all of the species you expected is because the manuscript was "put to bed" in 1997 - almost 10 years ago! - before many of the popular species were available. Definitely buy v.2, too, but realize that it will not have some of the lesser known species in it. They were either not available to Uwe or are too new. The DATZ book has most of the species in it that we know about. Koslowski's 2002 book has more forms than Cichlid Atlas v.1 & 2 combined, but lacks many of the more recent, popular species.

FYI,

I've had a few people express interest in this, so I'll update this thread with what I've told them.

The remaining book looks well used - likely by the staff. Cover is slightly torn and many pages have bent corners. All-in-all, not worth the $65 they are asking (they didn't offer the "discount" price last time I was there).

Unless you're desperate to have it, I'd wait for the re-issue.

In Polish Online-Shop there is no problem to buy first volume.
I have got v.2 now, and I've just ordered it today:biggrin:
