Hi all

this is my first post on here, and I'm hoping that somebody can shed some light on a problem with my apisto's poorly eye. the problem began with a small white mark that appeared under the lens of his right eye. I have moved him to my small tank of around 4 gallons which only has a school of cardinal tetra, and a school of harlequins in and have been treating with melafix, pimafix, and doses of broad spectrum antibiotic every 4 days. but the problem persists, and the spot got bigger till the point that it clearly impedes his vision.

his home originally was my 25 gallon with 2 adult angels, 1 black molly, 7 tiger barb, 1 clown loach, 1 bristlenose plec, 1 wood shrimp, 2 amano shrimp., golden gourami pair. moderately planted with plenty of cover in the form of bog wood overhangs, and dense plant covered shady areas.
CO2 injected so PH in the morning can be up to 7.4 from my tap water, but slowly decends to 6.4 with CO2 on for 10 hours. no Co2 in the small tank that he is in is and PH is constant at 7.4. nitrite, ammonia 0 nitrate rarely goes above 20 with religious weekly water changes.

his behaviour and appetite is fine, and does not appear to feel unwell at all, milling around all areas of the tank and generally getting on with life with limited vision well.

lots of my searches to date have lead me to look at ich or white spot, but that doesnt seem to explain the syndromes here. this has been going on for maybe 8 weeks now, and Im coming up nought..

hope you can help..

Jimmy

Hi all,
Looks like "cloudy eye", which fish can get from exposure to high ammonia levels (NH3), or physical damage to the eye. As it is a planted tank elevated ammonia is less likely. Another option is that it is a cataract. I don't think in either case there is much you can do about it now, and he looks OK, so I'd pop him back into the main tank.

cheers Darrel
