echinodorus quadricostatus 'magdalenensis'
Height 10 - 15 cm
20 - 28 deg c
15 - 20 cm across
south and central america
fast growth, easy
i often stop into any lfs on the way home from work, and look at what plants are being offered for sale. usually i don't buy anything, the selection is the normal fare, and i almost always have 2 or 3 plants in mind that would look good, and don't bother with the rest. my 35 gal tank has been run in, (chock full of hygro polysperma) the algae has subsided, and the N and P have been running at 0 since i started it, and there is hardly any algae. so, it is time to rip out the hygrophylia polysperma, and slowly work my way across the tank with my 'nice plants'.
anyway, today i'm looking at the plants, and there are these little swords for sale, not priced- just came in. i have these on my short list of 'must have' plants, and these particular ones seem in quite nice health. it is not that easy to find plants that when full grown, don't completely fill a 35 gal tank. so i enquire as to price, and (for a little sword) the price is 11.95 can. (7.40 u.s.) well, i was thinking of growing a row, but at that price, well it is a pretty dear price to get 3 or 4. 'oh no,' he says, 'you gotta take this one.' and he pulls one out of the back, with 4 runners on it, each with 3 or 4 small plantlets. yikes, yes i do need that plant!
anyway, i paid the price for this little plant, and got my 'plant row' of these ltittle swords. i also got some heteranthera zostefolia on the weekend, and with what i've got in there it should be pretty nice in a month or 2.
plants:
1 red ozelot sword
1 brown wendtii crypt
2 green wendtii crypts
a stand of spiral vals (the short ones)
a row of cabomba furcata (finally got my lights set up so it is growing in nice and RED)
6 sprigs of heterantha zostefolia- soon to be a jungle covering the whole right side)
a nice growth of limnophyllia sessiflora- soon to be a junge covering the left side of the tank.
1 e. quadricostatus soon to be 10 or more. hey, maybe i'll even get a flower on the end of one of these runners.
fish:
5 a. cacatoides (plus some fry)
12 beckford's pencilfish
7 silver hatchets
2 gold spotted dwarf bushynosed plecos
now i need to get a nice carpet of glossostigma for the front of the tank, and some riccia to grow on the bogwood. (the last plants on the list.) maybe i'll make it to next year's aga contest. i won't win, but i would love to even enter.
