I have a pair of Apisto. Pebas that I got from a club mini auction here in Indianapolis and they successfully breed for the previous keeper. I can get them to lay eggs but she brings them out and her and the male eat them after a few days. She is sitting on eggs now and I'm affraid to do a water change because she ate them immediately after i put in new water the last time. Any ideas?

Hello ,

You will find that water changes in a lot of south american fish means the onset of the rainy season and thus the urge to spawn and lay eggs. It may be that they pair of your apistos think that the rainy season is now starting and thus believe the next batch of fry will have a greater chance of survival. I would suggest no water change at all for about 2-3weeks. Sometimes eggs are also eaten, because the eggs are not fertilised or have fungus on them. What size tank and water qualities do you have ? cheers jk

tank size is 15 gallons w/ sponge filter. water change weekly 30-40%. water tests clean. The tank these fish came out of was a 30 long. I hope that the tank I have them in isn't too small. And she layed eggs Tuesday which was the last time I did a water change.
