There is no difference.
Römer used the name Ap. maciliensis in his book, the previos name for that species were Ap. sp. "Rio Mamore".
But others do not agree with that classification. It is not comprehensible and very arguable, that this fish is the same as the the subspecies which was described by Haseman (1911) as Ap. trifasciata maciliense. Therefore other experts see this species as an undescribed species and call it Ap. sp. "Rio Mamore" further on.
I agree and also can say that the two pair that I worked with had male children with either red or blue tails. So if you are going to try to breed these guys, don't pay extra for the color tail you want.
That is possible as I don't know exactly where mine came from. Did I have mixed pairs breed? I don't know for sure. My records show they first spawned for me in Feb. 1999.
I also thought A. maciliensis and A. sp Rio Mamore were just one single species until I met Maik Bayer from Apisto Heaven and Marco Lacerda. from Trop Rio. According to them, A . sp Rio Mamore is a species which grows much larger and with a much higher back than A. maciliensis;
