Dealing with Frozen Blood worms/Brine Shrimp

Hello All,

I would like to know how other members prepare their frozen food,if no fresh foods are available. IE Frozen blood worms - I basically take then, place them in a glass, let them melt, then add my aquarium water and feed to my apistos. Is it now better to pour the whole glass in or to filter the worms out and just use the worms and discard the water ? Same with shrimp.

What are your thoughts on this please ?

I do the same. I get cubes of what ever I want to feed. Set them in a tray...let them thaw out. Then I pour portions into small plastic soufflé cups (like shot glasses) and wash them out. I then use a small baster to put the food in so it spreads in an area of the tank. This helps avoid the faster fish or those w/bigger mouths to get most of the food.

I hope I have helped you some.

Gday G,

thanks for that, do you use the same water in which the frozen worms came or do you wash out and drain and just then use the worms ?

you should rinse them before putting it in the tank. the "juices" will be incredibly high in phosphates, and would therefore make the tank prone to algae outbreaks.

I drop them in water that I get from the tap. Swirl them once or twice and repeat the process twice. Although your water looks clear...I just hate cleaning tanks later.

I use a lot of frozen food, my prefered method is to break off what I am going to feed into a small plastic bowl, then add some tank water to help thaw it out. Once thawed I use a spoon to distribute the food over the area of the tank so no one fish can have a feast.
I have hatchet fish which are a pain to feed, I take a frozen square of daphina, let it defrost a while in some tank water, then drop it into the tank whilst it is still in a fairly solid lump. The daphina floats on the surface of the water letting the hatchets feed whilst the daphina falling off the bottom of the lump keeps the mid and bottom feeders happy.
