In theory I picked up 6 young D39 and put them in a 29:

My wild inaccurate guess is these two are females

this picture is for @Mazan who will understand it:

I don't have any good pictures of the other 3 but will work on them - i think they are likely too young to sex at this point. Also the tank is still a work in progress as I have driftwood to pile in there as well as some plants.

The current population is 6 d39; 10 morse code tetra and 10 m. egregius (1/2 inch maybe). The final population should be 10 morse code tetra 2 to 4 D39 and ~15 nannostomus espei (some store in usa sold something they claimed were wild caught n. espei).

Still undescribed species from the Rio Nanay. Some put it also in Hemigrammus, but I prefer the classification used by Aquarium Glaser.

Ok, not the Rio Nanay proper, but the drainage. I trust the sources I have and at least two locate them there, the third (linked above) locates them in Peru as well at least, not naming a river basin.

The reason I asked is that when we collected the Morse Code Tetra in the Rio Putumayo drainage (LINK), which is far away from the Rio Nanay, the fisherman guiding us told us that this species could only be found there, and in a location much further east.
When I saw your statement that the species lives in the Rio Nanay, I checked again with my fisherman-friend in Iquitos, Peru, who actually collects and supplies this species to the trade. He said that he had no knowledge or experience that the species exists in the Rio Nanay drainage.

Allright, in the meantime one of my sources has corrected themselves. I'll not mention more than "Peru" from now on.

Are any of these photo good enough for species identification (or sex)

. Also while hard to see in the tannis some of them are developing very nice colouring:

Some of your fish seem to faintly show the typical black markings in vertical bars 2 & 3 that distinguish D39 from other personata-like species. When shown in a pronounced way, they look like this:

Here is an updated picture of one i think is very likely a male:
q2.jpg
And these are the fishes sold as n. epesi:
q7.jpg

I ended up putting them in the a. Bluketa aquarium since it had no dither. Actually while it is a 65 all it has are the a. bluketa and 4 oto; so a bit of extra space...

This is the 29 though more leaves and plants will be added - i think the drift wood is adequate as there are a lot of nook and cranny and i've seen some of the D39 take spots and tell the other to leave - usual tail wag - i'll keep a close eye on them to see if they get more aggressive - right now there are 6 but my intention is to reduce them once i can sex them - a bit depends on violence level.
q4.jpg

Not my best work but it will improve. I'm fighting with the ro system as the water is a bit high @ 20 ec base the aquarium it self is running around 65 which i'm concern might be too high.

 You got the holy grail of Nannostomus! *bows in awe*

(I mean that seriously, no irony!)
Unfortunately they are in an aquarium a little on the warm side for them (78-79); also they are kind of pricey but hopefully the price will drop. I should probably learn how to breed them at some point assuming they do well.

Hum. I do have a cooler blackwater aquarium with c. hastatus - it is around 75; maybe i should try to panic them into moving?

o_O Erm... I consider them to require warmer temperatures around 26-27°C, how do you get to the conclusion they require cooler water?

and a few other list temp range of 22-26 or 22-28; then i tend to take the middle with a step lower as good temp or around 24-25 then i convert to f and find 75-76.

I don't like these bigher ranges, they are basically just the standard range for retailers so people don't care much.

They come from the Guyanas, so I assume at the warmer end, as per usual e.g. in Suriname.
