Can anyone ID these two please?

Can anyone Identify what types these two are? One is a subocellatus and the other a taeniatus.

Are you trying to ID them to type location?

The subocellatus is most likely a matadi... that is the most common in the hobby.

The teaniatus is difficult from the picture. I need a better view of the tail. It also looks like a female, which would make type locality more difficult. Maybe moliwe? If it is an aquarium strain, then it is likely a mix of more than one type.

The first is a female subocellatus looks like a moanda. And the second could be a moliwe but i could be wrong.

Pelvicachromis IDs

Hello Chromis,

Looking at your photos, I'd say that the Pelvicachromis subocellatus is the form that we call "Moanda," due to the band of silvery scales that surround the belly. Ironically, the P. subocellatus "Moanda" that have come into the US, of late, are not collected anywhere near Moanda.

The P. taeniatus is a Nigerian form. Female P. taeniatus from Cameroon do not exhibit horizontal lines on the lower part of the caudal fin.

Thank you all for your replies.

I was informed that the subocellatus is of the form "Boma" but since I hadn't heard of that form I was unsure. The pair have spawned and I have seen some wrigglers one time but that was a few days ago. Today, I have seen the female hanging around near the top of the tank and the male chases her whenever he sees her. She is doing fine though as there are hiding places around the tank. I can only assume that something went wrong and he wasn't happy with the result which would explain the chasing. Would they get together again though?

The female taeniatus is unknown as she seems to have arrived on a shipment of fish and the shop wasn't sure what form she is. I was informed that there isn't a male but I think I can get one somewhere else and wanted to know what type so I can match her to the correct male. I have to say I bought her for the sole reason of her markings as I have never seen so many spots on both caudal and dorsal fins as well as horizontal lines on the lower half of the tail. I will go and get her a partner soon and update you all. I am aware that there are different colour types for the taeniatus form. Would a Nigerian Red be okay?
