This year, our guest speaker will be Dr Paul Loiselle from the New York Aquarium.

Paul will be giving two presentations; the first covering the Cichlids of Central America and the second examining Cichlid Conservation (with the emphasis on the Cichlids of Madagascar).

For those of you unfamiliar with Paul Loiselle, he is a Resident Research Associate for the American Museum of Natural History Department of Ichthyology and is currently Curator of Freshwater Fishes at the New York Aquarium. He has worked for the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) since the late 1980s and continues to represent the WCS on its steering committee. He has been the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) Freshwater Fish Taxon Advisory Group Co-chair and represents the WCS on the steering committees of the the AZA Lake Victoria Cichlid Species Survival Plan and Madagascar Faunal Interest Group. He is actively involved in efforts to document and conserve Madagascar’s freshwater biodiversity.

He is considered one of the world's experts on cichlids and has dedicated much of his professional career to safe-guarding Madagascar's cichlid populations, discovering 15 species in the process. Paul has published numerous scientific papers on biology, conservation and taxonomy, and well over 100 publications in popular aquarist magazines.

His books include the standard work The Cichlid Aquarium and The Fishkeeper’s Guide to African Cichlids. Paul is a Founding Member and Fellow of the American Cichlid Association and currently serves as Chair of its Conservation Committee.
