I have been informed by two different GSL brine shrimp companies that we are going to experience another shortage year , and that increases of 25% can be expected industry wide in December and January... Could be a sales tactic, but I doubt it. Check with your sources. you may want to stock up!
I spoke with three brime producers in Utah yesterday. Two were completely out of 90% hatch eggs and were quoting distributer pricing to me in the range of $350/case (12 cans) for 80% eggs. The harvests were described as poor. The Utah wildlife department (I don't remember the actual name of their agency) posted a document (I will try to find it again) that describes this year's harvest as poor. I have not seen prices drop yet from resellers like NABS or BSD, but they may still be selling out of reserves.
I have paid as low as $10 a can for 10 case lots of 90% eggs from the producers I talked to yesterday. Now they want $350/case of 80%? Something is going on...
What is really interesting is the overall decline in harvest of brine shrimp over the past few years. The site has links to great graphics. It appears that there are far fewer good years than there are bad years.
The apistogramma.com store has 90% hatch rate eggs that are available to forum members for $20/can (full pound). There are only 57 cans remaining. Please e-mail me if you need some:
Ted,
That is an interesting site. You are right. It doesn't look particularly good, does it?!
This is the Wildlife depts evaluation as of Oct.
"The prospect of significant reproduction during the rest of the fall is unlikely. The weather has caused lake temperatures to approach 50° F. Production is slowed substantially when this happens, based upon laboratory studies. The numbers of all life stages of shrimp are diminishing, as the counts demonstrate.
Most of you have reported difficulty capturing the cysts this year, relative to past seasons. The weather has not been as favorable for harvesting conditions either."
I think I want to add a can (maybe 2) to my order with you.
Neil
GREAT NEWS!!!!!!! The latest report from Utah is that the harvest season has bounced back. Early indications of a low harvest proved to be premature. The harvest to date has broken the total poundage record set in 2000-01.
