Are bitaeniata and trifasciata from the same complex? I'd like a pair of each in a 55 gallon. The purpose is not to raise as many fry as possible, but to simply have a community tank.

No, they are from 2 different species-groups - the bitaeniata-group/bitaeniata-complex and the trifasciata-group. A. bitaeniata is part of the agassizii-lineage, while A. trifasciata is part of the trifasciata-lineage & is more closely related to A. cacatuoides.
