Apistogramma sp. "Napo 3"

I published a report from our second expedition in the Peruvian Amazon in 2009 on my site, while we were still there.

Now the fish have had some weeks in my tanks. Especially the males are still quite pale compared to the colors they showed in the nature.

First one to breed is the one I preliminary call A. sp. "Napo 3" (just to separate the three species, I'm naming them Napo 1, 2, and 3 after which was collected first, second and last)

The fishermen called them A. cruzi..... (but as I have experienced that they among others also call different color forms of A. sp. Nany and A. cf. eunotus for A. cruzi........:frown

Any idea what species they actually are?

Tom, based on what I see, the fish look more similar to A. sp. Putumayo. I don't believe that it is either A. cruzi or sp. Putumayo; probably something new.

Believe it or not mine have coloured up particularly well... All the abdominal stripes are very red in colour (Like Alto Tapiche) and caudal quite orange.
Not bred them yet though.... Great pics Tom, Well done mate.

Talking of A.sp."Alto Tapiche", I think its a Regani group,eunotus complex species.... Shows very blue gill cover,split bar 7 and light marking/bar between caudal spot and bar 7. Only 1 male left in good health, initially thought it was a female...
