Hi all, I recently found a lone A. sp. 'breitbinden' male (the identity of which was confirmed by Sven Kullander himself), amongst a group of A. iniridae.
I think they were all imported from Colombia. I'd love to breed this species, but am uncertain which variant of 'breitbinden' this is.. Please find below a picture of an identical specimen. Your help is much appreciated..

Based on your photos (thank you for the other photos that you sent to me), your fish is still young. It is less than 5cm/2" SL. The dorsal fin needs additional time to develop. Now, I would guess that it is a typical young A. sp. Breitbinden (A 164). If the rear dorsal spines (not the soft rays) remain about half as long as spines #2 and 3, then it would be A. sp. Kurzlappen-Breitbinden/Short-lappets-Broad-banded (A 166).

Hi Daniel,
The fish you had from me at the weekend are the typical A sp.Breitbinden (A164), Ive never seen the A.sp.Kurzlappen-Breitbinden imported into the UK.
Good luck with them....
Mark...

ID success

Hi Mike Wise and all other interested parties,

You were totally correct. We now have both the 'breitbinden' and the 'kurzlappen' varieties here in the UK.

It is actually very easy to see the difference by looking at the male's dorsal fin (for the 'kurzlappen', only the first 3-4 dorsal spines are greatly extended, the others being much much shorter; the shape of the head is also more compressed and elongated than in the 'breitbinden', but not sure that this is a generally consistent difference).

If anyone ever acquires one of these variants, please don't get mixed up and interbreed them!

Thanks again, Mike

Yes, that is Kurtzlappen (A 166). Based on the dark blotch on the caudal peduncle, it probably is closely related to A. sp. Breitbinden (Rio Negro) (A 165).

I have a tank full of fish I imported from Germany that look just like Tom Cs photo. Will all of the dorsal lappets grow out or only the first four?

It depends on which species you have. If they are A. sp. Breitbinden, the the other dorsal spines will grow out. If they are A. cf. sp. Breitbinden (Kurzlappen), then only the front lappets grow long. Young/small specimens will be hard to tell apart.
