Apistogramma Sp. Algodon

Hey Dear Forum Members,

I imported these really beautiful Apistogramma's labeled as Apistogramma Sp. Algodon but I am unable to figure out the correct variation that it really is. Everytime I think I made an ID they change a bit in color and I get confused.

Can you guys help me out on what species it actually is... My best guess goes to Apistogramma Sp. Papagei.

I hope the pictures do justice, I had to shoot about a 100 pictures to get a few decent ones and tried to get them from as many angles as possible.

Based on the shape of the caudal patch (caudal spot + dark part of Bar 7) and the pattern on the caudal fin, I would say that the fish are A. sp. Pebas.

this is actually pretty awesome. I do have a hard time figuring out how many females I have. Can you make an estimate by looking at the pictures ? It seems to be I have more males then females.

This being Sp. Pebas is actually a blessing. I am getting wildcaught Papagei this friday so it's awesome that I have both of them now.

I hate to say it but I am not positively sure any of the photos show a female. I could be wrong of course. Females usually show a lateral band broken into a row of spots and show no pattern in the caudal fin. Look for these features, plus more round tips on on anal and dorsal fin.

Hey Mike,

Yeah I was worried about that. I know I atleast have 1 female because she had eggs and was bright yellow, all the others did not display any change in color. I might seperate the one I know is female and wait till another one goes yellow. If that doesnt happen I know I have only 1.

I imported these knowing I couldn't pick pairs but didnt expect to get so many males.

Could be A. sp Roca eterna too.; If you have a picture from a femal in breedingdress tell us more. I bought a time ago also A. sp. algondon, and were actuale A. sp. Roca Eterna.
