Apistogramma Glaser

Hi a couple of questions...Is the Apistogramma Glaser Rojo ( red ) Blanco ( white ) the exact same fish as the Apistogramma Barlowi?? Is Glaser just another trade name for the fish?? I believe there are only 2 known Apistogramma mouthbrooders ( Barlowi, Kelleri ) which leads me to believe that the Glaser is the same species as Barlowi. I have just acquired a pair of Glaser and would just like it cleared up.

Thanks :)

Yes, "Glaser" is a trade name for A. barlowi. As is "Hauswell".
When I collected the red (rojo) form of A. barlowi in a small creek entering a tributary to the Rio Ampiyacu in the Peruvian Amazon, in October 2006, the fishermen told me I had collected "Apistogramma Glaser".
The red form was called "Apistogramma Glaser" in the trade, and the white form was called "Apistogramma Hauswell".
In recent years, these two trade names have been used somewhat interchangeably, so now you'll never know for sure what color form you'll get, no matter what the trade name is.
The last years A. barlowi has also been found further west from the Rio Ampiyacu drainage. This form normally shows red color only in the upper half part of the head.
And the very last form to be found, shows a more overall purple color, especially in the posterior part of the head:

Hi Tom

Thankyou for your reply...so it's just as I had thought Glaser is the same as Barlowi. This matters not to me as I think it is a beautiful fish. I've been on the lookout for this particular species for a while and I'm now very glad to have it in my aquarium!! :)

The fish was exported by a fellow I believe you know very well ( Francisco ). And so I then located and bought myself a pair from a very renowned source. They just arrived today and are settling in nicely. :)

Next on my list is the Kelleri, I know I might be waiting a while, but it'll be well worth it if I ever achieve my goal!! :) I know you keep and breed these beautiful fish. ( Fantastic photo on the BCA site by the way, a well worthy winner )

I already have your web page bookmarked a while ago!!

Thanks

John

P.S. I have also read Marks article on the Maulbruter/Rojo Red ( this is the species I now have ) very interesting!!

Nice read there.

but isn't Apistogramma Jutai (please spelling) another mouth brooding species?

(never kept them myself due to their high $$ price) but thats what i was told that they were mouth brooders.

Hi DJ JD,

I think the Apistogramma Jutai or Diamond Face are other names the Kelleri is known by if I'm not mistaken. :)

You're correct, John. A. sp. Diamond-face/Jutai is the same species as A. sp. Kelleri. This species come from the area around Leticia, Colombia. According to the collector, the 'Jutai' name was only used to confuse other commercial collectors.
