Well these fish certainly didnt hang around. After picking up several nice pairs of Apistogramma and a couple of other fish from fellow BCA member Microman (Mark Breeze), i settled them in and this pair of lovely Apistogramma Gibbiceps spawned almost instantly..Water in the spawning tank is very soft 60ppm witha low PH of 4.8(Measured today as the fry emerged from cave), temp is around 24c..lower than some of my tanks but they are on the second tier in the fishroom and closer to the floor..Anyway i am trying to produce broods that are female heavy, extra females are easier to move on than extra males...Hopefully the lower temps might play a part in sex ratios??
I put them in the tank on Monday 11th August, they spawned on the 21st and ten days later brought out this nice size brood of 100+..I saw them emerge from the cave for the first time and that is always a special sight..I love the way the mother is so cautious at first, only spitting one or two fry out and then when safe depositing the rest just outside the cave entrance..They soon ate the first feed of newly hatched brine shrimp and microworm and after an hour or so are being shepherded around the tank by the mother..This is a Stunning fish which i am pleased to have spawned...
