Neil,

My two 'wild' females came from there, $4.95 a piece; I eventually picked up a male at Pet N' Pond in Clackamas, $14.99 :-(

The male and a female have 'paired' off, and the female spends a lot of time under some drift wood she's made a 'cave' under (ignoring the spawning cave I bought her) so I'm hoping they'll spawn soon.

Ha! Those must have been two of the four wild females I returned to TWS! :D I made every effort to pick out a male from the original batch that arrived, but they all turned out to be females. I gave up waiting for a (wild) male and didn't want to wait for them to get another wild shipment in.

Small world, eh?

Regards,

Yes, as much as I love bitaeniata I decided to pick up a pair of 'Inka' instead. A. bitaeniata are beautiful, but they have nothing on the 'Inka' when it comes to behavior.

Well I guess I'm either in the search for a new male Aggie or a new Apisto pair; I came home yesterday and couldn't find my male in the tank swimming. After a thorough search, I found him wedged in among the stalks of one of my plants; so I don't know if he got stuck and drowned, or if he settled there after he mysteriously died while I was out. I had a heck of a time getting him unwedged. Female and Otos in tank are fine.

I don't mean to make light of your situation, but fish don't drown. ;) It's likely it was sick to begin with and passed quickly in the night or while you were away. I've seen internal parasites do that, but it could be another cause altogether. I am of course very sorry to hear of your loss. Male aggies shouldn't be too hard to find here in Portland (at least not the bred ones), but as you said this is also an opportunity to try a new species--the mouthbrooders, perhaps? It'd be pretty interesting to be able to observe their breeding behaviors. And of course I'm very happy with my Inkas and would recommend them in a heartbeat.
