I just set up a 29 gallon planted apisto tank, using a DIY CO2 system. The tank has now been up and running for a couple of weeks now, and everything seems to be going well. However, I have noticed some kind of clear/whitish slime growing on the output of my CO2 tube, and the CO2 bubble counter I am using. I assume from the appearance that it is most likely some sort of bacteria. Anyway, has anyone else experienced this? If so, what did you do to get rid of it. I tried to brush it off, but it has grown back within a week or so. Any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated! :D

I had this stuff!!

I had this happen years ago, only it was worse for me! I had the slime about 1 cm into the sand, all mixed with the sand, allover the plants, tank walls, rocks, pretty much everything but the fish. I vacuumed it out. I had been running the tank (55g) for a long time, and had recently added a diy co2 yeast system. I figured it was actual yeast growing in the tank, but I never did find out what it was.

Since then, I stayed away from yeast for several years. When I did decide to do diy co2 again, I was certain to do 2 things; ensure that the tubing between the bottle and the tank was completely dry (I used a hairdryer) and then I used a check valve on both the popbottle side and the tank side of the tube. That way I figured the yeast would be less likely to grow/spread along the inside of the tube if it was certain to be dry. I have no idea if this actually did anything, but i never saw it again.

I think its also worthy to note that the tank conditions may have been hospitable to bacterias at the time, as I also had a BGA issue at that time.

Did U use filter bottle on your DIY CO2???
This is common when you don't use filter bottle...
Just insert one little 0,5l bottle into your CO2 chain, at the very end of it...
Fill up 0.5l bottle with tap water and drill 2 holes on cork... your hose from CO2 MUST be inserted in water so the "slime" can stay in your bottle...

>>'ew gross!! Think ottos would eat it?'

your fish mouth poop as it comes out of another fish, or eat their own eggs or babies and the thought of a pleco eating some slimy substance grosses you out?? even a dog won't eat poop. (they do enjoy an nice meal of barf now and again though...)

as for whether oto's eat it, i can't remember, i stop giving to the 'dead oto relief fund' a whle back. i got awful tired of buyng those fish and watching them die one by one.

All things in perspective, I guess it really is pretty tame compared to most fish behaviour, lol.

"even a dog won't eat poop"

I know a few who like to snack from the catbox!!!! Now that, *is* gross.

I was wondering if otos eat it, as I'm thinking of putting a diy system on one of my tanks sometime soon, and If there is a fish in the tank who eats it, that'd be nice, just in case it happens again. (which hopefully it won't)

I don't have any otos in the tank right now, haven't kept any for a while. They do have a knack for dying don't they. I bet they're one of those fish who often come in with parasites, or are just shipped from too far away, too long of a journey or something. Like the singapore rams you see in the fish superstores.

The white stuff is yeast and it is best to remove it because it will eventually clog out put. A lot of people use a home made external bubble counter to trap this stuff. It is also one of the reasons airstones are not recommended on the end
