This specimen came from Rio Vichada(Cumaribo). Cumaribo is the well-known catch location of this species.
Does anyone know of A. hongsloi with these characteristics? Especially, the plaid pattern on the tail fin.

Is it A. Honsloi? No red along the body by the anal fin. Perhaps that’s just on domestic forms?

This may be one of the color type of A. hongsloi(wild caught) depending on the catch location.
The general type looks like attached photo.

Your fish looks exactly like the other ones I have seen from that area. The red pattern in the caudal fin is probably an individual variation.

This is one of the males I have had from Vichada.

It doesn't show any pattern in the caudal fin like your fish does. And I don't recall seeing any A. hongsloi with a pattern like rows of colored rectangles in the caudal fin.
According to the description (Kullander 1979) there is no pattern in the caudal fin ("Caudal fin immaculate").
So yes, I find your fish quite special, Taka. Thank you for sharing!

Thank you for your information, Tom. As Frank says, this pattern come from the individual difference.
Anyway, I'm looking forward to your new expedition reports about the interesting Apistogramma on your Website! Do you have any plan to go to South America, again?

Hi,

just in case you happen to live in Germany (or Netherlands): I have a wildcaught female A. psammophila, you could have it for free. I have no use for it anymore.
