It took my pair of this beautiful Apisto 4 unsuccessful spawns to learn how to get viable fry. The first 4 spawns all fry were put outside the cave in the sand a week or so after spawning. The female did continue to care for the every day dwindling number of young until after 3-4 days nothing was left. The fry never really started swimming. Some hopping around and that was it. I must confess I was somewhat disappointed after the 4th failure. In order to avoid getting a spawn every 3-4 weeks, I separated the female from the male, thus giving her rest and time to 'fatten up' (Daphnia, white mosquito larvae, grown Artemia). After a few weeks I united the pair again.
Whether or not this did the trick I do not know. Fact is that I now see, with the 5th spawn, fry with more vitality and motility. A good number as well.
Picture does not show all of them and the female's colour is not at all like in reality (yellow-orange).
Tank: 100x40x45 cm. pH 4.2, conductivity around 50, temp 25-26 C.
