What a forum. Glad to be here.
I recently bought a trio of borellis, but am unsure that I did indeed get 2 females and 1 male. When I purchased them, I was hoping based on seeing them that they were yellowhead (right name? anyway, not opals). I'm waiting on a camera to definitely i.d., but right off the bat given some other posts I've seen I would guess they're Steel Blues. However, most of the fish in the tank at the store looked like females - they all had a yellow hue, and there were some larger, slightly more colourful ones with longer dorsal, caudal and anal fins that I assumed were the males. The three I got: 2 one and a half inch, both slightly yellow with a horizontal black stripe across their sides. They also have darkish vertical lines, about an 1/8 of an inch and 1/8 of an inch apart down their sides. The first dorsal spine is also black, and they have a black line at the very start of their caudal fins. The other (what I am hoping is a male), is around 2 inches, maybe a little more, and is slightly less oval-shaped than the smaller two. He also has less yellow, but still has some. His fins (fin ray, dorsal, caudal, pelvic and pectoral) are only slightly larger proportionally than the other 2's. He does, however, have considerably more blue on his head (hence the Steel Blue question), though in some lights the smaller two also have hints of it.I'm wondering what the rules of thumb, if there are any, for distinguishing between borellis and Steel Blues, as well as between males and females.
Thanks for reading the lengthy post.
