3ft dwarf tank...

hiya all,

Currently I have 2 tanks. The big one is a 3ft tank with four very large, very messy, very anoying (but cute) goldfish. I love 'em, but they're just so much work to keep healthy and clean :p

The second is a small 40L tank with has a male Agassizi (Andre) and his one tank mate, a little neon, he killed the other two.. dang agressive fish I actually watched him stalk the remaining neon for two days untill he thought that he didn't mind having just one tank mate.

The idea is to turn the 3ft into a dwarf tank. I would ultimatly love to have a set up where I can breed Agassizi.

I have everything to run the 3ft but a heater, which isn't a big deal. I have a powerhead filter and a corner filter, about 5/7kg of live rock, light, plants and an air pump. I'm also in the process of drawing up plans to make a trickle filter.

So, the big question is, what fish do I put in the tank? The 'to get' list at the moment is 2 female Agassizi's and a small school of guppies. The guppie idea is for the sole reason of having live food. I have tried it once with gourami's and it worked quiet well. Andre will not look at any type of commerical food. He's very picky and will only eat something if it's moving. I even tried the 'starve him into eating some else trick', which worked on a Krib I had once, but Andre just ended up lossing a lot of weight

Appart from obvious space/territorial problems, what other fish would get along with the Agassizi's? Am I only looking at other dwarfs, or are there a few larger fish that would get along? Are the Agassizi's likely to inter-breed with some species of other dwarfs? If so, which types of dwarfs should I avoid?

And, what speices of fish would the Agassizi's be with in the wild?

Any imput is welcome ^_^

You are getting rid of the goldfish, right? I don't like the guppy idea, they need a little salt in the tank and the aggie won't like the salt at all. Tetras or pencil fish are good tankmates. I like the rummynose tetra best.

I know what you mean by having a picky apisto, my panduros wouldn't eat anything but live. Consider keeping a culture of daphnia, grindal worms, buying live blackworms at the lfs.

The biggest item that caught my eye was "live rock"! The only live rock know of (I don't know too much anyway.) is for marine tanks. That would never work in any freshwater tank. Also all my Apisto's are fed live food only.

I think I've been reading too many marine fourms 0.o I ment just plain old rocks...

I feed Andre black and blood worms. I tired brime shrip, but he didn't take to them very well; which doesn't bother me because they are three times more expensive, and three times more difficult to keep alive than worms.

And yes, I will be getting rid of my goldfish. Hopefully they will pay for a heater, as they are rather large orandas. I love the goldfish, but with them being in the main area of the house, everyone keeps feeding them.. I tried hiding the food, but then they were just fed human food. No one believes me when I say they're not hungy >_<
