hello everyone ,

What are your thoughts on the gender of this bitaeniata brazil fish?
It looks like a female to me but I couldn't figure it out.

It seemed that way to me too, but I was worried about the excess of neon lights on her cheeks.
However, the fact that the tail tips are not pointed and oval-like suggests that it will be female. His short, colorless anal fin also indicated that he was female. thank you so much Mike

Looks like a pair to me. A nice one.
I opened a fish shop in 1969 and would often order "Assorted Dwarf Cichlids."
I seemed to mainly receive lots of A. bitaeniata at only $0.25 each in lots of 25 and used to be a little disappointed!
Second most frequently received species of Apistogramma was A. steindachneri. These ran about $0.40each in lots of 25.
Third most often received S.A. Dwarf Cichlid species I would get was Nannacara anomala. These were rarely more than $0.20 each in lots of 100.
Hard to imagine now.

Picking through Cardinal Tetras that a LFS in Seattle used to buy in box lots led to my discovery of a couple juvenile unidentified Apistogramma on 2 different occasions.
I ended up with 2 firsts for me.
3 juvies grew out to be a pretty trio of A. pertensis.
On another occasion 2 juvies grew up to be a pair of A. gibbiceps.

Few things are more fun than finding interesting bycatch specimens in large shipments.
Although these days I think the fish are a bit more carefully scrutinized than in the past.
