Looks like a female N. anomala. If i am correct females do not have the shining or metalic colors. When my female would get into a breeding mood she would turn very dark (much like the picture). I just added some N. anomala last week, so I will be able to verify this later.
With RO water, one of the primary details is to watch your KH. If the KH (carbonate hardness) goes below 2 or 3 then you may be in for some trouble. (ie Ph crashing)
There are several ways to increase the KH:
1. Get RO right from the LFS and dose as needed
2. Using baking soda and dose...
Give it a reed look with sag or val. Aquatek usually keeps sag in stock (notice you are from Austin - I am too). You could also try java fern in strategic places - assuming you have rockwork or woodwprk. java fern does not grow fast, but when it takes off...WOW
I got a little tired of the slow scraping mechanisms (ie credit card, algae scraper, small razer blade). I bought a 4" scaper by American Line Personna.
The body is a hard plastic, and of course the blade is metal. I was able to get the hard algae off my 120gallon (4 ft) in about 5-7...
Beautiful plant and not very "easy". It will grow like a weed once you get it started. IME, it tends to do better in direct light with CO2. It looks like burnt orange under intense light. Also make sure you have iron and other nutrients in the water column. It feeds from the roots as well...
Try a razor blade - it works but takes some time to do. Make sure you do not drop any small gravel articles or you will scratch the glass.
Try a credit card - if the green spot algae is still soft then this works fairly well.
I agree with Neil. Also make sure you have caves or some cavelike places in teh tank if thaey are cave brooders. I like to make my tanks natural with the use of wood and plants.
Thanks for the reply, Neil. A friend at the LFS is going to South America later in the year and I have asked him to bring me back a few if he is in the correct areas. The way I acquired mine was as a contaminant. I remember when I saw it...I said that's a large male nannacara without any of...
I'm looking for Apisto steindachneri females. It is funny telling people this since the first thing they say is "those use to be everywhere a few years ago, but now you just don't see them anymore." I received a male while purchasing some nannacara, and I want to make him happy. (That...
The eheim is rather quiet. The only time it is loud is when it is dry or when you are filling it up. When bubbles get trapped (again when you are filling it up), just shake it a little. Personally I would not do a wet dry - I see no benefit in a plant tank. If you need extra oxygen at night...
First, please stop screaming
Second, what color cloud? If it is white, then it is a bacteria bloom (most likely). If it is brown, then diatoms or brown algae. If it is green, then green water. If it is gray, check for dying fish. If is it red, all 911, you have more problems...
If this is a usual size 90, and it will be heavily planted. Then I would go with a single Ehem 2217 or a pro 2228 (2028). If not so heavily planted consider teh 2226 (2026) model. I like the pro modles more because they are quicker to clean than the regualr canisters. Also with your media in...
i second farm41's suggestion. CO2 is an investment (unless you DIY) There are a lot more variables besides adding CO2 that could make your unhappy tank - happy again. For example: light, plants that you choose, fish that are housed with the plants, etc...
I had great success with spiral vals and several anubias varieties as well as java fern. The one experiment that suprised me the most was growing crypt spiralis with my peacock and red empress. (Important: I kept more meat eaters than plant eaters). After the crypt got 'use' to the tank, it...
Here is what I did in my Malawiian African tank:
1. added coral to the substrate (actually did the entire substate with coral and a bottom layer of laterite.
2. Added CO2.
Plants grew well and the fish did not show signs of stress.
I read your post as "do not fertilize" - which I don't agree with. Thank you for the clarification.
Again, it is all about balance. I have noticed with my mom's tank that even the slowest growing plants grow fast under the righ conditions. My secret with her tank is lighting, small...
