    Splashing Tetra ID

This is a very useful thread, so instead of creating a new one I thought I'd just continue using it to solve my little mystery! I received some beautiful Pyrrhulina this week, they came in as P.laeta but I think they might be P.brevis or something similar. I'm no expert on these guys, so if...

    Newly described Apisto's from Colombia

Words are in from Mikolji about the location where this photo was taken: "it was taken in a small Morichal in the Anzoategui state of Venezuela." Does this match the description of A.nororientalis? Haakon

There's no additional information attached to the photo, but I have now asked Mikolji what river the photo was taken in.

    Apistogramma Harem species

You can keep any species of Apistogramma in small groups, if space allows it. You need to consider the need for territories, larger territories for the males. Each female needs a smaller territory with some sort of hiding place and some objects that create natural borders to their territory...

    yo ! Nannacara adoketa

These guys are MEAN! you can almost tell by the look of the fish that they are out to raise havoc :D I keep 4 in a big tank (540 liters), and slowly but surely the other fishes in the tank disappear. My adoketas are now about half-grown, and they haven't paired up yet. But you can tell they are...

    Apistogramma gephyra or not ?

A.gephyra develops a spade-shaped caudalfin to some extent, but usually not as much as A.agassizii. If you're thinking about the fish in the photo above, I think the angle makes it look less pointed than it might be. But A.gephyra males can also have a caudal fin that is not very...

    Apistogramma species unknown

These are trade names created by exporters in South America. The often make up new fancy names for species that are already known under different names. A.sp "Celeste", A.sp."Violet" and A."Napo Blue Face" are unknown to me. A.sp."Llanero" was imported to Germany last year, and even though I...

    Apistogramma gephyra or not ?

Yes, gephyra can show two lateral spots like the one in your photo. I have gephyra at the moment, and of the 30 specimens most of them show two lateral spots like yours. It's still rare to see it as clearly as in your photo. Haakon

    Book

The fact that tvere are numerous species not covered in the first two books is exciting. I think it would be interesting to hear which species and forms are yet to be covered, perhaps this would even be of assistance to the authors? Maybe we can list those suggestions here? I can think of...

    Newly described Apisto's from Colombia

About A.megaptera: Is it likely that this is the same as A166, A.sp."Kurzlappen-Breitbinden"? I'm thinking about that dorsalfin feature, with only the anterior rays being extended an the posterior rays being even - is this feature not also found in A165...

    Book

I know I would. But really, a 3rd one? Is there enough material for that? I mean, I read everything I come across about Dwarf Cichlids but most of the species are well covered in the first 2 books...will it be mostly new descriptions of species then? Haakon

    A.agassizii "Netz"?

I recently received some Apistos from an exporter in Manaus, Brazil. Most of the batch appears to be A.gephyra, but among them I think I see two, a male and a female, that stands out from the rest. Could they be A.agassizi "Netz"? Here's the male: Here he is compared to a gephyra next...

    gephyra vs agassizii females

Thanks, Tom :) yes, I aggree it's not 100% accurate to rely on this alone. However, the black markings are indeed a way to separate gephyra and agassizii. According to Koslowski, gephyra shows a more defined dark part of the lateral band in the part between the main lateral spot and the gill...

    gephyra vs agassizii females

I have now read closely in my books (Koslowski, Linke & Staeck, Römer), and found some very useful information, especially from Koslowski ("Die Buntbarsche Amerikas Band 2, Apistogramma & CO."). Apparently gephyra can show 2 lateral spots in certain moods, which is definately the case with most...

    gephyra vs agassizii females

Apistogramma gephya wild Manaus. Sounds exciting right? I received 30 of them. There sure are some nice males among them, with yellow cheeks. However, I can see a specimen or two of what seems to be A.agassizii "Netz", and also some males with no yellow on their cheeks. These could of course be...
