Many(most ?) plants for aquatic use are normaly/often found growing above the watersurface ..in nature..
They are then put in humid farmhouses, and also...
I found this interesting swedish pdf .. regarding Fe2+ and Fe3+...
Maybe some help for someone...in special-situations..!?
(Translation from Swedish is needed..)
I have been doing hobby-studies/-searching about the reason for high mortality when keeping Acestridium sp. - catfishes..(Fe in the...
I could not help myself from adding this link...
Maybe not an option for everyone+ everywhere, but sure an interesting solution.. (if affordable+not living in an apartment in a city!!);):)...
... and here is another thread with links and some tips in it..
Maybe this can help you out what the trouble really is about, and what to do about it...

Hi again...
The flagellates are a quite tough to get rid off as it is.... But one more thing....
I get some bad suspicions about your gravel/sand.. It looks calcareous..
This may cause high pH + other effects/reactions when medicating..?????
Maybe it creates some xtra problems for the healing...
Maybe the loss of your Apistos may be due to internal flagellates.. in the stomach/digesting-system..(this is often the most common health problem with Apistos..)
Then they often move in a S-shaped movement along the sand , as you are mentioning..

Hi cicrush13 + all..
In your pics..., to me it looks like you`ve got A. cf.ortegai (Pebas ?) or some other closely related species..
They are not very fussy about the pH, so pH 6-7 + relatively low kH should be OK.. (Any "normal" planted aquarium with "mature" water in process should do..)...
Hi Paislee + all..
I guess it depends on where you are located!!!??
A. cacatouides are often found in most Stores(in Europe!!)..or may be easily ordered if you ask them..
In Europe we also have got several options via some/a few well-stocked Local Fish Stores (they may order from German...
OK.. maybe you can try to lurk out which wholesaler/person your LFS got them from?? ..and wright it down!!
Then you will have some info anyway... and sometimes you can get more info later on...
(sometimes from people working for the wholesaler ..or at specific "Cichlid Assoc."-meetings ?)
"We"...
She looks very protective.. just like she should!!!
And the fry almost looks like they are sprayed with diamonds..:D
If you can...save several batches of fry.. if the couple is "in the mood" and keeps on "delivering" without any problems... you never know what gender the may become!!!.. or how...
Nice to see !!! Male+female from what I can see!!!!??? and I still think it looks like A.sp. "Abacaxis" or A.cf. pulchra..
If you can "bribe" them with some food , and get a nice pic with them standing by/at the front glass..,
.. Mike W. will probably be able to help you to sort out exactly...
Sad to hear about the gender issue...:(
One of our local wholesaler have got them on their list at the moment..
But I must get a tank ready first.. (I`ve got killie-fishes, Apistos, Bettas and all kind of fry in all my tanks now!!)
I will have to start my own private fish-preserving exhibition...
