Almost all of my tanks are choked with plants and I use no Co2 supplementation. Rather, through trial and error, I have found a significant number of plants that thrive in my regular conditions. I find that it is much better to find plants that adjust to my parameters rather than try to adjust...
I kept these was in the mid 1990's but then I only had males. They were agressive but otherwise typical apistos.
About three weeks ago I got a trio of wild paucisquamous that have turned out to be all females. So now I have kept females and males but never both at the same time! Anyone in the...
This is a tough question. You are right that the pair will gang up on the lone female. However, they are probably already doing this which is why she is hiding in a cave. I don't think you can ever expect them to become a compatible trio. Nanochromis tend to form strong pair bonds and not...
If the female was killed you would find the body at some point. Since you have not it is likely that the female is hidden. It is possible that she has spawned and is hiding in a cave with eggs. However, the courtship and spawning of these fish is usually a prolonged affair and you would likely...
If you are talking about keeping them all in the 15 gallon it is possible that you will be able to keep them all because they will be so crowded that the agression will be spread out among all of the fish. However, you will not be able to observe the normal behaviors of the fish.
In the tank...
My fish get a daily feeding of bbs every evening. I start a fresh batch every night. I feed fairly heavy as the shrimp will survive for several hours or longer and the fish will feed heavily. Even full grown adults will thrive on this diet.
However, I also feed a lot of other foods...
In my opinion no one in the U.S. would pay some of those prices. With just a few exceptions, I believe that Americans have repeatedly demonstrated that they are not willing to pay premium prices for dwarf cichlids. Therefore, we see the fish offered here at lower prices. The other side of this...
I think they would do OK for you. Your water is pretty alkaline for most Apistos but cacatoides are found in fairlyneutral water in the wild and the Orange Flash strain has been acclimated to aquariums for many years. The only problem might be with the fertility of any eggs that are laid.
In...
If you want to protect the maximum number of fry I would get rid of the Corys. In my experience they can be deadly on newly free swimming fry. When they get close to the school the female will signal the fry to go down to the bottom where they sit still and the corys can easily get them. Once...
I think it is a little of both. A male that grows to have impressive fins can usually be identified at a younger age. However, to get the biggest , most impressive finnage it needs maturity. However, in every batch of fish there is variablity and some fish are more impressive than others.

Sounds like a tank that will give you many hours of pleasure. If you have never kept cichlids you will become captivated by their behaviors.
My only caution would be that the cory cats will likely end up eating any fry produced. If you want to raise any fry produced you must be prepared to...
Java moss, Java fern, watersprite, various crypts, anubias all should do fine. My technique is to try plants and find the ones that thrive in my conditions.

For me baby brine shrimp is the key. Once you learn to hatch them they are a great food. Micro worms are a great first food but as the fry grow it is hard to keep them well fed with them.
If you can;t culture the shrimp try using the decapsulated eggs. You feed these directly ans some...
Try creating a very complex environment with infinite hiding places. This can be done by adding a lot of leaves to the tank or with very dense plantings. In this type of habitat a fish can completely hide to avoid aggression. the first step is to create an environment where both sexes are int he...
I would be very suprised if the mother cares for these eggs properly but you never know. I expect that she will eat the eggs, perhaps quite quickly.
If you really want to salvage as many fry as possible I would pull the eggs and hatch them in a seperate container.
I don't know of any special characteristics of either of these that would make them unpopular unless the person trying to keep them knows nothing about apistos.
Persobnally I have kept both species and like them both. When first introduced the author dubbed nijesseni the "apsito superstar" of...
I like to use micro worms in these situations. If I over feed they will live on the bottom of the tank for a day or two. This allows the fry to graze on live food for a couple of days.
I would also add that lots of live plants is a great solution. I have left newly hatched fry, attended by...
