Female Agassizi ID help.

Hello,

I recently bought an apisto labeled simply as Apistogramma Agassizi. It turned out to be a female and the owner of the shop said they came in without any other variant information, but he said they are the red type.

The female shows quite a bit of orange / red on her fins.

Does anyone know what is meant by the red type of Agassizi? What variant would that be specifically?

In terms of pairing her with a male, should I be looking for a double red variety?

If I had fry, would I be right to call them double red?

Thanks in advance

Tradenamers are free for all. They barely have a meaning. I have seen the same variant sold under up to 8 different names. As Mike said lately: It's marketing, nothing else.

Ok that’s reassuring. So in terms of breeding, can I stick to the ‘red’ types of Agassizi and not feel like I’m hybridising strains?

Can't oversimplyfy it. Depends on the individual fish.
If it's a domestic strain - knock yourself out. I detest those and usually compare them to domestic bettas or rams.
If it's a wild variant - Be careful, you could be indeed hybridizing species, not strains.

If im not mistaken, the Agassizi commonly sold as “double red” is a domestic strain right?

As for the female, I have no idea what it is other than being told it is the red type. Any ideas?

It’s about 6cm now. It presents its tail and wags it at the new double red i put in, rather than trying to fight it.

Yeah total length. Why do you say that? Because of the red in the fins? Pretty colourless male if so.

Because 6cm is slightly bigger than the size females even reach. There is always the chance of it being a sneaker male.
