What’s the main difference between a female and a male impersonating one just so I can keep an eye out

There is very little difference when young. As they get older/larger 'sneaker males' will show more color, especially blue markings on the face. The tips of the fins will become more pointed, too. Looking at your 2nd photo, if it is the same fish as in the 1st, you might have a young male. Like I originally wrote, "Still, at 2 cm length it is too small/young to positively sex." Only time will tell.

One of the blue face markings mentioned by Mike is particularly important for sexing, the so called agassizii-lip-spot. It is located on the lower part of the upper lip of males. The fish in both of your photos show such a marking - especially the one in the second photo. Unfortunately, as a diagnostic feature for identifying males, it only works in wild forms. In line bred forms (e. g. A. agassizii "double red") females can show such a lip spot too. However, I think the fish in the second photo is likely a male.

Probs not the best photo but any help on this to being female or sneaky male bought as a pair and about 1-2 months old

IMHO they are too young to sex. Give them 2 - 3 months and they should be sexable.
