South American tank.

I have a 29 gallon tank that I will be setting up in about a week. I have a idea of the lighting, filtration and the plants that will go in this tank but the fish are a different story. I know that I want a Apistogramma species and they will be the center piece of the tank but what about the other fish. I want them to come from South America. I want all of the levels to be covered (bottom, middle and top). Can anyone give me some species that will go with Apistos and that are from South America?

here are some ideas.
bottom : best left to the apistos
middle: neon tetras, pencilfish
top: hatchetfish
