Hiya All, I really need your thoughts.

I went to feed my fish last night and noticed that my cockatoo boy didnt come up for his food as normal. After the others had finished feeding i had a look in the tank poked in the wholes in the wood etc and he still didnt surface. I decided that he must have died and so launched into looking for him more determindly as i didnt want a little body in there.
After lifting everything thing up we eventually found him and he wasnt dead. He was very sad looking. Still quite colourful but he was very much wanting to hide and as soon as i put the wood back in he went straight back under it and hasnt been seen since, which is very unlike him.
I tested the water to see if there was something going on there but it was all perfect. Temperature is steady. He doesnt have any physical seens of illness. I put some Melafix in the water just incase he had some bacterial type thing i couldnt see. Everyone else looks fine and is behaving as normal.

Any help would be hugely appreciated. He was fine a couple of days ago.

I dont want to lose my little lad.

Laura :-(

You mentioned "all the others" - how many fish are in this tank? Your lad could be feeling stressed if the tank is densely stocked. If your fish appears to be physically OK and your water is ok we're left to speculation. Do you have another tank where he may take a break from his socialising?

Hiya,

Thanks for your reply. My tank is quite understocked. Its 120L. In it i have:
5 x Zebra Danios
6 x Glowlight Danios
3 x Cockatoos (inc my boy)
3 x Otos
9 x Neno tetra
6 Shrimp

I have had my boy since February i think and he been fine always. Tries to bite me when im cleaning out the tank!!! They even had a 'litter' of babies, which we think got eaten as they slowly disappeared. He has been out a little more today although very determinedly staying in one part of the tank. I wonder if there is eggs in there again which he is protecting? Do they do that?

Thanks

Hello Laura,

Do you have a quarantine tank where you can put him into ? one for treatment and two for observation and three to relax him more . Can you take a photo and post. I agree that from what you describe there is something wrong, especially if he does not feed. Cheers jk
