Mine neither have dorsal spots. Maybe it is a P. Taeniatus "Bandawouri" The males have dorsal spots.

A truly beautiful fish though

Hi,

thanks a lot guys for the indentification.

With this input I've searched new topic on the web and I've found that:

"Bandewouri is a locality from the southern part of taeniatus' range. The
forms from Kienke, Nyong, Loukundje, and Dehane (even the Lobe and Grand
Batanga) are all similar forms. The southern forms are considered the
"true" kribensis."

Is it a right consideration for your experience???

Fabio

Pelvicachromis taeniatus

Hello Fabio,

To my eye, your photos depict a type of tank-raised Pelvicachromis taeniatus originally from Nigeria. My reasoning is due to its black margin preceded by a yellowish/whitish margin on the lower lobe of the caudal fin. With one exception (P. taeniatus "Wouri"), no P. taeniatus form from Cameroon exhibits this coloration.

The status of P. taeniatus "Bandewouri" is not yet known. As for the "true" kribensis, that honor goes to Pelvicachromis kribensis (Boulenger, 1911), a form synonymized by Thijs van Audenaerde in 1968. More recent thought questions Thijs' synonymization; and, in time, the taxon will likely be reinstated. Linke & Staeck indicate that the fish described by Boulenger in 1911 corresponds to P. taeniatus "Kienke," but I find exactly how they made this determinatoin suspect. The "Kienke" form, at present, is likey a species complex and not a single Pelvicachromis species.

All the best,

Randall Kohn
